JOURNAL #26 - SPRING HIKES
Hiking in Spring is such a wonderful experience! The paths come alive with colour as the flowers bloom, and the air feels fresh and invigorating. At the moment around us it’s all bluebells and primroses. You might catch the songs of birds returning for the season or spot wildlife stirring after the quieter Winter months or in the early evening there’s even a few bats starting to stir. Plus, the moderate temperatures make it an ideal time for outdoor adventures—no Summer heat to slow you down!
Spring hiking calls for gear that balances comfort and functionality so you’re ready for any unpredictable weather. Here’s a guide to help you gear up:
Clothing:
Layer Up: Dress in moisture-wicking base layers, an insulating middle layer, and a lightweight waterproof jacket to handle temperature changes and potential rain. The Mallard Teece from Muddy Meadow provides both a base layer or a middle layer with a long sleeve t-shirt underneath.
Sturdy Footwear: Wear waterproof hiking boots or shoes with good traction to handle muddy trails.
Accessories: A waxed cotton cap for both sun protection and to keep your head dry in a shower, and lightweight gloves if it's still chilly.
Essentials:
Backpack: A comfortable daypack with enough space for water, snacks, and extra layers.
Hydration: Reusable water bottles or a hydration pack to stay well-hydrated.
Navigation Tools: Maps, a compass, or a GPS device in case the trail isn't well-marked.
Sunscreen and Sunglasses: Spring sun can be surprisingly strong, especially at higher altitudes.
Safety and Comfort:
Trekking Poles: Useful for balance on uneven or muddy terrain.
First-Aid Kit: Just in case of minor injuries.
Bug Repellent: Essential in some areas where insects start to wake up in spring.
