JOURNAL #20 - FAMILY WINTER WALKS
Family winter walks are a great outdoor activity you can tailor for the whole family. With some planning, the right clothing and gear, you’re all set. They are a fun way to spend time together while enjoying the beauty of the season.
Here are some tips and ideas to make your winter walks enjoyable:
Dress appropriately: Layer up to stay warm. Wearing thermal underlayers, like our thermal t-shirt, a windproof and waterproof outer layer, warm socks, hats, gloves or hand-warmers, scarves, and insulated boots will help keep everyone comfortable.
Choose the right location: Look for parks, nature reserves, or trails that are suitable for winter walks. Make sure they are safe and well-maintained, especially if there's snow or ice. If you have young ones in prams or people who have some mobility issues, choose firm paths and perhaps with park benches along the way for rests.
Plan for shorter walks: Winter weather can be harsh, especially for younger children or elderly family members. Plan shorter routes and take breaks to warm up if needed.
Bring hot drinks: Fill a thermos with hot chocolate, tea, or coffee to enjoy during the walk. It's a great way to warm up and adds a cosy touch. Our enamel mugs can be attached to your bag and mugs filled with a hot drink are good hand warmers.
Have snacks: Load up with chocolates and filling treats like flapjacks or pastries.
Nature scavenger hunt: Create a list of winter-themed items like pinecones, animal tracks, icicles, etc. and turn the walk into a scavenger hunt for the family. The Woodland Trust has some more ideas.
Capture the moment: Bring a camera or smartphone to capture the beautiful winter scenery and memorable moments with your family.
Safety first: Ensure everyone stays safe by being cautious of slippery surfaces, staying on marked paths, and avoiding areas with potential hazards.
This is one of our favourite recipes for hot chocolate.
Sea Salt Hot Chocolate for One
25g 70% or higher dark chocolate, broken into chunks
250ml milk (or dairy-free)
1 tbsp cocoa or cacao powder
½ tsp honey to taste
Pinch of sea salt
Put all ingredients into a saucepan. Gently heat and whisk until the chocolate has melted. Taste and add more honey or salt if you want. Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy!
If you have people staying over the festive period, have a couple of route options ready, get your gear together and let your guests know so they can come prepared.
Remember, the key is to have fun and enjoy the time spent together outdoors, appreciating the unique beauty that winter offers. Living with the seasons means embracing and appreciating our stunning outdoors.
